Duties: The Ohio Department of Education is seeking a visionary leader with proven educational and organizational leadership skills that can direct the Office of Approaches to Teaching and Professional Learning. The successful candidate will have strong knowledge of adult learning theory and the various approaches to teaching.
Major Responsibilities & Duties:
Directs the Office of Approaches to Teaching and Professional Learning in providing leadership and support for schools and districts in the implementation of Ohio’s standards, curriculum, and instruction:
• Ensures implementation of Ohio’s Strategic Plan for Education: Each Child, Our Future;
• Coordinates and aligns the work of the Office with the updates of Ohio’s Learning Standards and related model curricula in foundational knowledge and skills and well-rounded content, leadership and reasoning areas through extensive stakeholder engagement, which includes but is not limited to: English-Language Arts, Literacy, Mathematics, Computer Science and Technology, Social Studies, Science, World Languages, Physical Education, Arts, Financial Literacy and Career Technology;
• Oversees, develops, supports, and implements internal and external professional development regarding instructional strategies and approaches to teaching, which includes but is not limited to: STEM, competency-based, project-based, cultural responsive teaching, blended learning, formative assessment, habits of mind, rigor, thinking and reasoning skills and depth of knowledge which are aligned with the work of Ohio’s Learning Standards and related model curricula;
• Oversees the implementation of professional development and technical assistance emphasizing innovative practices to support districts in helping students become college and career ready leveraging regional systems of support;
• Determines office strategies for supporting, developing and evaluating professional development that are aligned to adult learning theory and the Ohio Standards for Professional Development;
• Collaborates with other offices to provide or oversee aligned professional development and resources that support educators (teachers, leaders) in acquiring, understanding and implementing instructional strategies to support student learning;
• Coordinates with the Office of Learning and Instructional Strategies and other Center Offices to effectively implement initiatives;
• Coordinates and supports other Agency offices, which includes but is not limited to School Improvement, Community Schools, Exceptional Children and Early Learning;
• Collaborates and provides support for the implementation of: Ohio’s Plan to Lead Literacy Achievement birth to grade 12; Striving Reader’s Grant; support for Emergent, Early, and Adolescent Literacy and third grade reading guarantee;
• Collaborates on the development of curricular support materials that focus on high-quality curriculum and resources;
• Supports major legislative and State Board of Education initiatives and policies as they arise (e.g., Third Grade Reading Guarantee, graduation requirements; adoption of standards and model curriculum);
• Leads the development of annual strategic goals for the Office:
• Coordinates communication/guidance to the field;
• Coordinates communication with legislators, state board members, U.S. Department of Education and internal ODE staff;
• Manages the budget and staffing for the Office of Approaches to Teaching and Professional Learning;
• Manages office structure and workflow;
• Stays current with new communication tools, technologies and strategies;
• Develops partners in the field (e.g., ESCs, Network of Regional Leaders) that will help open and maintain two-way lines of communication;
• Coordinates the alignment of Ohio’s Learning Standards with:
o The Office of Assessment;
o Ohio’s Career Technical content standards; and
o The Office for Exceptional Children on the extended standards for students with significant cognitive disabilities;
• Coordinates with other ODE offices and external organizations on topics of blended learning, Innovative Learning Network (ILN), STEM/STEAM, competency-based education, personalized learning and the learning management system (LMS);
• Provides evidence as needed for submission for peer review approval process for Ohio State Standards and Assessments;
• Provides direction for the development and execution of school improvement projects;
• Completes other duties as assigned.

Experience Required: Minimum Qualifications:
• Completion of a Master’s degree or higher
• Experience developing and implementing professional development in a school setting, to include a minimum of 5 years of administrative or managerial experience
Preferred Qualifications:
• Political acumen with various stakeholders and constituent groups
• Deep knowledge and experience working with programs that support and provide services to grow educators
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills related to educational policy, resource allocation, and program design
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and a proven ability to build productive relationships with, and communicate complex messages to, a wide variety of stakeholders
• A strong understanding of Ohio’s educational policy and landscape
• Unwavering belief that all students can learn and achieve success in school
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and team-building skills
• Systems thinker with creativity and strong problem-solving skills

Wage or Salary: $81,000 - $108,000

Approximate Work Hours or Days: 40
