JOB DESCRIPTION
Position: Assistant Elementary School Principal
Reports to: Principal
Employment Status: Regular/Full-time
FLSA Status: Exempt

Description: The Assistant Principal acts in the capacity of the Principal during his/her absence. He/she assists the principal with teacher observations and evaluations, educational programs, and student needs, such as discipline and attendance. He/she works to promote parent and community involvement in the school. The Assistant Principal shall enforce the rules of the Board of Education and Superintendent and have authority to supervise all teaching and nonteaching employees in the school in order to accomplish district goals.

Essential Functions:
• Assist the principal to provide instructional leadership for the school, giving direction, motivation, and supervision to accomplish all curricular and extracurricular goals and objectives
• Administer the school program in conformity with policies adopted by the Superintendent, Board of Education, and provisions of law
• Assist the principal to conduct a continuous study of the development and needs of the school building/program
• Supervise staff as assigned, and assist principal with teacher and staff goal-setting, observations and evaluations
• Take all measures necessary to ensure the safety and security of students at the schools
• Provide leadership for enforcement of the code of conduct, conduct programs to develop positive behavior in the school, and deals with discipline situations in a consistent and constructive manner
• Suspend students in accordance with the discipline policy and with appropriate due process procedures
• Help staff resolve problems that impede student learning and participation in school and assist with disciplinary procedures, actions, and record-keeping
• Assume responsibility for validation of excused/unexcused attendance reports (absences and tardies), and implement a system for tracking student attendance and providing intervention where needed in attendance problems
• Participate in Intervention Assistance Teams, IEP conferences, and parent conferences as needed
• Assist principal to fill staff vacancies through locating and screening applicants, conducting interviews, and making recommendations as to finalists for consideration
• Assist with supervision of substitute teachers and other temporary personnel
• Conduct a regular program of parent/community involvement, and maintain regular communication with parents and community members
• Maintain a visible presence in the school(s), at after-school events, and in the community
• Participate in the district administrative team when assigned to do so
• Carry out school improvement initiatives, i.e., for the continuous improvement plan/strategic plan, as assigned
• Assist with state required testing, diagnostic, and achievement testing, and with alternative testing programs; help analyze test results to provide staff direction for instructional modifications and interventions
• Assist in making sure that the district’s courses of study/content standards and programs are being carried out in the school
• Work with child service agencies, juvenile court, and other groups in the community that are involved with children and families
• Communicate high expectations and show active interest in student progress
• Help supervise student/school involvement activities during the school day or evening as directed
• Develop own professional goals and maintain an individual administrative professional development plan
• Assist in preparing an annual report of building goals, accomplishments, problems, concerns, and activities
• Provide supervision to maintain a clean, neat, and safe environment
• Assist principal with emergency preparedness by developing plans and conducting fire, tornado, and other safety drills as assigned
• Perform such other duties as directed by law or assigned by the Principal or Superintendent

Minimum Qualifications:
• Certification/Licensure by Ohio Department of Education as elementary principal (grades K-5)
• Minimum of five years teaching experience
• Ability to work with others and excellent interpersonal communications skills, both oral and written
• Knowledge of child development, K-5 curriculum and content standards, and balanced literacy programs
• Proven record of excellent attendance and reliability
• BCII/FBI clearance
• Negative TB test results
• Alternatives to the above qualifications as superintendent and/or board of education may find appropriate

Other Desirable Qualifications:
• Master’s degree (M.A.) or equivalent
• At least five years previous administrative or supervisory experience
• Appropriate state of Ohio administrator’s certification
• Alternative to the above qualifications as the Superintendent or Board of Education may find appropriate
• Accurate record-keeping skills
• Accessibility and availability to work long hours

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Residency within North Union Local School District desirable but not required
• Technology competency at novice or better level
• Positive personality traits such as sense of humor, tact, friendliness, understanding, fairness, patience, and vitality
