Job Description


JOB TITLE: High School Principal



REPORTS TO: Superintendent



SUMMARY: Directs and coordinates the educational, administrative, and counseling activities of the secondary school by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Serves as a positive role model for students.
Maintain strict confidentiality in all matters.
Develop, monitor, and update building CIP.
Assumes responsibility for the implementation and observance of all Board policies and regulations by the school’s staff and students
Participates in the selection and supervision of all school personnel.
Conducts meetings of the staff as necessary for the proper functioning of the school.
Plans and supervises fire drills, tornado drills and an emergency procedures program.
Establishes supervision for all activities and programs that are outgrowths of the school’s curriculum.
Establishes the master teaching schedule.
Evaluate all building staff in accordance with board of education adopted procedures and state guidelines.
Serve as an ex-officio member of all committees and councils within the school.
Leads in a formulation of a philosophy and objectives for the instructional program.
Guides the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum and instructional services.
Interprets the curriculum and its philosophy to the Board, the staff, and the general public.
Supervises the school’s teaching process.
Maintains active relationships with students and parents.
Recommends the removal of a teacher whose work is unsatisfactory, according to established procedures.
Orients newly assigned staff members and assists in their development.
Evaluates and counsels all staff members regarding their individual and group performance.
Organizes and administers the public relations program for the school.
Responds to written and oral requests for information in a timely manner.
Serves as a member of such committees and attends such meetings as the superintendent shall direct.
Cooperates with college and university officials regarding teacher training and preparation.
Works with various members of he central administrative staff on school management of district wide areas, such as transportation, maintenance, technology , food service, and special services.
Keeps the superintendent informed of events and activities of an unusual nature as well as routine matters related to the Superintendent’s accountability.
Establishes supervision for the care and daily use of the school facilities for both academic and nonacademic purposes.
Provides for adequate inventories of property under his/her jurisdiction and for the security and accountability for that property.
Prepares and administers the school budget and supervises school finances.
Maintains and controls the various local funds generated by student activities.
Establishes supervision for the maintenance of all required records and reports.
Establishes and maintains high standards of student conduct and enforces discipline as necessary, according to the due process rights of students.
Establishes and maintains an effective learning climate in the school.


Professional Responsibilities:

Assumes responsibility for professional growth and development as related to local LPDC planning for renewal of license, keeping current in literature, research and techniques.



Participates in various faculty and professional meetings, conferences, and other teacher training activities.



Teachers are encouraged to participate in one or more activities or student organizations, assisting pupils in selecting course of study, and counseling students in adjustment and academic problems.



Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.



Maintains required licenses and certificates.



Dresses in a professional manner that is appropriate for the assignment and/or activity.



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees: planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems as designated by the principal.

EDUCATION AND /OR EXPEREINCE:

Master’s Degree and five year of related teaching experience.



LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyzes, and interprets professional journals, instructional material, textbooks, and educational publications and teaching aides. Ability to write reports, lesson plans, and other written communication for parents, students, and administrators. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students, administrators and parents.



MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.



TECHNOLOGY SKILLS:

The employee will have an operational knowledge of either Macintosh or Windows based computers and related technology. The employee will take advantage of all district level technology training that is appropriate to their teaching assignment.



REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.



CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

A valid Ohio teaching and/or administrator/principal certificate as required by the Ohio Department of Education.

The employee will be expected to lift and move typical classroom equipment such as overhead projectors, TV/VCR’s, and computers on moveable carts.



The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee will be evaluated in accordance with the district requirements and within the timelines specified by law.
